The morning after pill, otherwise known as the emergency contraceptive pill or Plan B, is effective in preventing pregnancy after unprotected sex or failure of contraception.
This is when the oral contraceptive pill is not taken as recommended at the right time on a daily basis, or otherwise skipping or forgetting one or more doses of the pill. Other reasons include a split (broken) or slipped condom during sexual intercourse.
There are two kinds of emergency contraceptive pill (1) Levonorgestrel-containing pill (Levonelle One Step, Ezinelle, Una Emerres), which has to be taken within 72 hours (three days) of sexual intercourse or (2) ellaOne which has to be taken within 120 hours (five days) of intercourse.

The earlier they are taken the more effective. Both pills work by preventing or delaying ovulation (release of an egg).
